Two things make this category different from a normal wedding: you need more than one look, and mehndi is a genuine time commitment that has to happen before the wedding day.
Both get underestimated, and both are hard to fix late.
A trial is not a nice-to-have. Skin, lighting and preference vary enormously, and the first time you see a full bridal look should not be the morning of.
Book the trial for a day you have somewhere to go afterwards, so you can see how it holds up over a few hours and how it photographs in normal light rather than in a mirror.
Intricate bridal mehndi covering hands, forearms, feet and lower legs takes several hours for one artist. Then it has to dry, and then it has to stay on for as long as possible to darken properly.
Which is why mehndi happens the night before, or earlier. Work backwards from the wedding and be realistic — a bride who wants deep colour cannot have her mehndi done the same morning.
Mothers, sisters, aunts, friends. If forty guests want simple designs at the mehndi party, one artist cannot do that alone in an evening.
Ask how many artists come, roughly how long per guest, and whether guest mehndi is priced per person or per hour. This is the single most common place couples underbook.
Mehndi, sangeet, ceremony and reception usually call for different makeup and different hair, sometimes on the same day. That means the artist is either staying or coming back, and both cost money.
Ask specifically about the ceremony-to-reception change: how long it takes, where it happens, and whether they are on site in between or leaving and returning.
Makeup for photography and video is not the same as makeup for a party. Flash and 4K are unforgiving in different directions.
An artist who regularly works weddings will already know this — but say it anyway, and tell them whether there is a videographer as well as a photographer.
Bridal hair and makeup is not one booking. It is a different look for each event, often across two or three days, sometimes starting before dawn — which is why it costs more than a single wedding look anywhere else.
What moves it: number of events, number of people being done, whether the artist travels to you, and how early the call time is. Very early starts often carry a surcharge, and that is reasonable rather than a trick.

Work back from your departure time at roughly 45–60 minutes for the bride and 20–30 for each other person. One artist and six people is a four-hour morning. If the arithmetic does not fit, say so at booking rather than on the day.

Most do, and it is normally a separate travel fee, with an extra charge for a pre-dawn start. Both are reasonable and should simply be stated when you book rather than appearing later.
