Booking a dhol player
The dhol is the loudest thing at the wedding and the cheapest thing that changes it. A baraat without one is a group of people walking; with one it is a procession, and everybody dances whether they meant to or not.
It is also the booking couples most often leave too late and then under-order — one appearance, when the day actually has three or four moments that want one.
How many dhol appearances do you need?
Dhol is priced per appearance, not per day. Work out every moment you want it: the baraat, obviously, but also the jago or maiyan the night before, the couple's entrance at the reception, the cake or the first dance, and sometimes the arrival at the gurdwara.
Write that list down before you call anyone. A quote for "the wedding" means nothing here, and the difference between one appearance and four is the difference between a small line and a real one.
How many dhol players should you book?
A single player carries a baraat for a small wedding. Three or four together are a different experience entirely — the sound layers, and it fills a parking lot rather than a driveway.
For 300 guests moving down a street, more than one is worth it. For a hotel-lobby entrance with sixty people, one is plenty and three will simply be loud.
What does a dhol player cost?
This is the highest-impact, lowest-cost booking at most South Asian weddings, which is exactly why it should not be the one you trim.
The number moves with how many appearances you book, how many players, and how far they travel. Travel is real cost here — ask whether your venue's city is inside their normal range.

What does a baraat need to run properly?
Ask who is bringing amplification. A dhol carries outdoors on its own, but if there is a DJ playing alongside it down the street, that needs a battery-powered system, and not every DJ owns one.
Ask your venue where the baraat can actually form up, how long the walk is, and whether the route crosses a road. Some municipalities need a permit for that; some venues will not allow it at all. If you are also booking a baraat horse, the horse and the dhol have to be briefed on the same plan, because the horse sets the pace and it is slower than anyone expects.
When should you book a dhol player?
There are far fewer dhol players than there are DJs, and the good ones are known by name in their community. Twelve months out for a peak-season Saturday is normal, and this is routinely the booking couples discover is gone.

Is a dhol player worth it if you already have a DJ?
They do different jobs. A DJ runs the room from a fixed rig; dhol is mobile, acoustic and leads a procession outdoors where a DJ cannot go. It is also the cheapest thing at a South Asian wedding that visibly changes it.
Can a dhol player perform indoors?
Yes, and it is very loud in a way that is normal for dhol and startling to a venue manager who has not hosted one. Tell the venue what is coming, particularly for a hotel-lobby entrance.
What should the dhol player wear?
Most bring traditional dress as standard. If you want a specific colour to match the baraat or the groom's outfit, ask when booking — it is usually possible with notice and awkward on the day.
