A professional bhangra set does something a DJ cannot: it stops the room, and then it starts the floor. Booked well, it is the hinge of the evening — the point where the seated guests get up and stay up.
Booked badly, it is eight minutes of people watching politely from their tables.
When in the evening should a bhangra set go?
The usual mistake is putting the performance immediately after dinner is served, when half the room is still eating. Put it after the plates are cleared and immediately before the floor opens, so the energy has somewhere to go.
Tell your DJ and your MC the plan. The transition out of the set straight into the first dance floor track is what converts a performance into a full dance floor.
What space does a bhangra group need?
Bhangra involves jumping, and it needs floor area, floor that is not a slippery marble lobby, and ceiling height. A group that normally performs on a stage will ask about the stage's dimensions and weight rating, and they are right to.
Give them the venue name early. Many groups have performed at the big banquet halls before and will know the room. If they have not, a photograph of the space is worth sending.
How many dancers, and how long is a set?
Ask how many dancers, how long the set runs, whether live dhol is included or extra, and whether they bring their own music or need the DJ to run it.
Ask whether the set ends with the audience pulled onto the floor. That is a specific skill, it is usually the best part, and not every group does it.
What drives the price
There are no published Canadian figures for wedding bhangra sets narrow enough to quote honestly. What sets it: number of dancers, set length, whether live dhol is included, costume changes, travel, and how long they are held on site before performing.
That last one is worth asking about explicitly — a group that arrives at 6pm to perform at 10pm is charging for four hours of waiting, and a tighter call time is usually available if you ask.

Eight to fifteen minutes. Long enough to build, short enough that the room is still with them at the end — and it should finish by pulling guests onto the floor rather than with a bow.
Can a bhangra group teach guests a few steps?
Many will, and it works well at a sangeet. It is usually a separate add-on with its own fee, so ask when booking rather than expecting it to come free with the set.
