Booking a same-day edit
A same-day edit is a short film shot in the morning, cut during the afternoon, and screened at the reception that night. When it lands, the room reacts in a way nothing else on the schedule does.
It is also the most labour-intensive thing on a videography price list, and it competes for budget with having another camera on the floor.
What is a same-day edit?
A three to five minute film covering the getting-ready, the ceremony and the day so far, edited while the wedding is still happening and played on the venue's screens during the reception.
It requires an editor working on site all afternoon, which is a person who is not shooting. That is the real cost, and it is why it is priced as a premium add-on rather than a small extra.
When in the reception should it screen?
After dinner and before the dancing, usually alongside the speeches. It needs the room seated and paying attention, which is a slot you have to protect on the running order.
Agree it with your MC and DJ in advance. An SDE played while the buffet is open is a lot of money spent on background video.
What does the venue need to provide?
Screens or a projector, a working audio feed, and — critically — a quiet room with power for the editor to work in for several hours.
Confirm all of it in writing, and have the videographer test the connection to the venue's screens before the reception starts rather than during it.

Is a same-day edit worth the cost?
It is if you want a moment that stops the room. It is not if the same money would buy a second shooter — more coverage generally serves the final film better than a screening does. Decide which you actually want.
When does the videographer need to stop filming for an SDE?
Usually mid-afternoon, so the editor has hours to cut before the reception. That means the SDE cannot include the reception itself, which surprises couples — it covers the getting-ready and the ceremony.
Can you get a same-day edit for a multi-day wedding?
Yes, and it works particularly well: the film screened at the reception can cover the mehndi and sangeet as well as the ceremony, which gives the editor far more to work with than a single day would.
