Pre-wedding

Choora and Kalire ceremony

The bride's red bangles and the golden kalire, put on by her maternal family.

What happens

A Punjabi morning ceremony on the wedding day or the day before: the bride's maternal uncle (her mama) puts on the red and ivory choora bangles, first washed in milk and rose petals, and her sisters and friends tie the kalire to them. The bride then shakes the kalire over the heads of the unmarried women; whoever a piece falls on is said to marry next.

Small and emotional, and a lead-in to the day rather than an event of its own: the bridal hair and makeup artist is usually finishing while it happens, and the photographer and videographer need to be in place for the ritual and the group that follows.
