Pre-wedding

Roka or Tilak

The families formally agree to the match, with gifts and sweets.

What happens

The roka or tilak is the first formal event: the two families meet, agree to the match, and exchange gifts and sweets. In many North Indian families the tilak is the groom's side receiving the bride's family; the roka marks that the search is over on both sides.

Usually a daytime gathering at home or in a restaurant's private room. Vendors: a photographer, light decor (a backdrop, florals, a seating area for the couple) and, for a longer guest list, catering and a planner.
